“It won’t turn on” describes four distinct states with four different causes. Most troubleshooting articles skip that distinction and hand you a list of steps, which is why the list is so long.
Decide which of the four you have first. It removes three quarters of the list before you touch anything.

Which of the four is it?
1. Nothing at all. No light, no fan, no sound when you press the power button. Power isn’t reaching the board.
2. Lights or fans, but a black screen. The machine is alive; the image isn’t arriving. Could be the display, could be the board.
3. It reaches the manufacturer logo and stops. Hardware initialisation succeeded. The failure is in loading the operating system.
4. It starts, then shuts off after a few seconds. Power arrives but can’t be sustained. Usually a protection circuit intervening.
The sections below follow that order.
State 1: no response
Drain the residual charge. Disconnect the charger, remove the battery if it’s removable, then hold the power button for at least thirty seconds. Reconnect the charger only, and try again.
There’s a reason this works. A separate controller manages power on a laptop, and if it latches into a bad state it will ignore the power button entirely. Holding the button bleeds off stored charge and resets that controller. It operates below the operating system, which is why it works when a reboot can’t.
A deeply discharged battery needs time. Run a battery flat enough and the machine won’t start the instant you plug it in. The protection circuit waits for a minimum voltage first. Leave it connected for thirty minutes before deciding anything. Plugging in for five minutes and concluding it’s dead is a very common mistake.
Suspect the charger. Does the adapter have an indicator, and is it lit with nothing else connected? Have you tried a different wall socket? If charging is the actual problem, laptop not charging is the better guide.
Remove every connected device. USB drives, external SSDs, docks, even an SD card. One attached device can prevent power-on entirely.
State 2: powered, but dark
One test settles most of this.
Connect an external monitor. If an image appears there, the machine is fine and the fault is the laptop’s own panel or the cable feeding it. If the external stays dark too, the fault is on the board (graphics or worse).
That single check separates a screen replacement from a mainboard repair, and those differ by an order of magnitude in cost.

Brightness may be at zero. It sounds absurd and it happens. In a dark room, shine a torch at the panel at an angle. A faint image means the backlight is off rather than the machine being dead, and the brightness-up key will bring it back.
Move the lid slowly through its range. An image that appears even briefly at one angle points at the video cable running through the hinge.
State 3: stuck at the logo
Power and hardware initialisation both passed. What’s left is storage and the operating system.
Disconnect everything and retry. A USB drive left plugged in frequently causes a hang while the machine tries to boot from it. This alone resolves a surprising share of cases.
Try to enter firmware setup. If F2 or Delete gets you into the setup screen, the hardware is healthy. While you’re there, check whether the storage device is listed. If it isn’t, the fault is the drive or its connection.
Recovery mode. With a damaged operating system, Windows offers recovery automatically after a couple of interrupted boots, and a Mac has a key combination at startup. Reaching that screen means your data is probably still recoverable.
State 4: starts, then dies
Something is shutting it down deliberately. Three usual candidates.
Heat. A machine that’s been unused for a long time, or one with blocked vents. Check the intakes and retry somewhere cool.
Insufficient power. An underpowered adapter fails during the current spike partway through boot. Try a different adapter, ideally the correct specification.
The battery. If yours is removable, running on the charger alone answers it immediately. And if the battery is visibly swollen, stop and read the swelling section of laptop not charging before doing anything else.
The lights and beeps are a diagnostic code
Many laptops signal the reason they won’t start through a blink pattern or a beep sequence. Three blinks, a pause, three blinks is not random: it’s a code the manufacturer defined.
Count it and write it down: how many blinks, what color, what interval. The manufacturer’s support documentation maps those patterns to causes, and quoting it at a service desk skips several diagnostic steps.
Beeps work the same way. Several short tones and one long tone mean different things.
If it is a new machine, stop here
Don’t attempt repairs here. A new machine that won’t power on is the least arguable defect there is. Do the power drain and the thirty-minute charge, and if neither works, contact the retailer.
Opening the case or removing screws complicates the conversation immediately. The safe boundary is removing external devices, trying another socket, and checking the adapter light, and nothing beyond that.
Bring this to the conversation:
- Which of the four states. Describing it this way shortens the call considerably
- The blink pattern and any beeps, with counts and color
- What happened immediately before: an update, a drop, liquid, a power cut
- That you already did the power drain and the thirty-minute charge. Omit this and you’ll be asked to do it again from the start
- Purchase date and order details
That last one matters more than it looks. A machine that won’t start is a refund or replacement inside the return window and a repair after it. Don’t let the time spent trying to revive it eat the window. Make the call first, then keep trying.
