The video never leaves your device

This test takes the feed from your camera and paints it on screen. Nothing is recorded and nothing is uploaded. Turn the camera off when you're done, or leave the page — the connection is released either way.

Before you start

Check that the privacy shutter or cover isn't closed.
Close any video-call or recording app first. They hold the camera and block the feed.
When the permission prompt appears, choose Allow to start the preview.

What to look for

Stutter. Move your hand slowly across the frame. Heavy smearing or jumpy motion means frames are being dropped.
Tearing. Look for horizontal lines, shifted color bands, or parts of the image that don't line up.
Noise. Some grain in a dim room is normal; visible grain in good light is not.
Focus and color. Watch for focus that hunts back and forth, or a strong overall color cast.

If there's no image

Click the icon left of the address bar and confirm the camera permission is set to Allow.
Make sure no other app is holding the camera, and close them all.
Check for a hardware switch or function-key lock on the device itself.
Reload, or try another browser. Failing in only one browser rules out the hardware.

Before you decide on a return

Camera quality often falls short of expectations, and 720p versus 1080p is a visible gap. Compare the resolution listed in the product spec with the one shown in the test panel. A mismatch is worth raising.
